The little guy follows a daily schedule, appearing in the morning and afternoon at set times, since Nov. 7th http://www.carolinayoungbirdersclub.org/apps/photos/photo?photoID=187609649 187609649 In Flight- Still wing Photo taken by Frank Parker & Barbara Edwards, using a remote-operated camera technology developed by Frank. Using incredibly fast shutter speeds, at over 60 frames per second, he was able to capture the Calliope's wing still- a remarkable feat given that the tiny creature can beat his wings up to 80 times per second!!! http://www.carolinayoungbirdersclub.org/apps/photos/photo?photoID=187609650 187609650 Showing Off Here the immature male shows off his developing gorget... just wait until he's an adult, with beautiful strands of purple iridescent feathers adorning his throat! Calliope Hummingbirds are quite rare in the Carolinas. As far as I know, there are under 10 records in the state of North Carolina, and likely under 5. Thanks to Barbara Edwards and Frank Parker for opening their home and yard to strangers wishing to see this incredible wanderer!
