The Outer Banks are just one of those great NC birding hotspots. The drive is kind of long but maybe over a break you could get your dad out there :). As for a pelagic, I'm still deciding which is better- summer (tropicbirds and petrels) or winter (auks, skuas, fulmars). By the way, the pelagic trip on Saturday found a Yellow-nosed Albatross off the coast of Avon (Hatteras Island) which is SUPER rare. Classified as endangered, and only a few records on the U.S. Atlantic coast.

Thanks Martina! It really is a long drive out there- over 8 hours to Ocracoke, one way. Maybe next winter we can do an over night Young Birders Club field trip on the Banks. That would be a lot of fun, even if the Snowy Owls don't return. Not sure if you get seasick or not but we could also do a pelagic (ocean) birding trip.

We've been to the Outer Banks only once before, when I was much younger. I'd love to go again, although my main concern would be getting there (on the fall Huntington trip my dad was exhausted, and I don't want to push it). A pelagic would be really fun, since the only seabirds I have checked off are the absurdly common ones.

Really nice! Kinda jealous of all the rarities you saw, but we'd never make it to the Banks in time. Nice album!
