Red-cockaded Woodpecker
The cockade is visible on the back of the head in this great photo. This woodpecker, a male, is feeding on insects among the bark of a Longleaf Pine. Red-cockaded Woodpeckers are a Federally Endangered Species; they are reliant on dwindling Longleaf Pine forests for their survival. Photo by Patrick O'Connor-see his other woodpecker photos in the "Red-cockaded Woodpecker" Album!
